A Mattress Impacts Sleep and Health

A person’s bed is a big part of their life. It is estimated that an individual spends a third of their lives asleep, so it is no surprise that the time sleeping can have a big impact on time awake. Therefore, a bed and mattress are central to every aspect of how people live their lives. Here are some surprising ways that a mattress impacts an individual’s sleep and health.

Decreased Stress

In 2009 a study was conducted with healthy men and women. They slept 28 consecutive nights on their regular mattress and then another 28 nights on a new, medium-firm mattress. They were asked to evaluate their level of stress based on factors like racing thoughts, worrying, nervousness, headaches, and irritability. The results showed that the new bed offered a significant decrease in stress. This is possibly due to an increase in sleep quality and a decrease in pain from the new, firmer mattress.

Allergic to the Bed

Dust mites call a mattress home. They feed on the dead skin cells that people shed naturally. These are found in and on a bed. These are especially problematic for people with asthma. According to WebMD, as many as 20 million Americans are allergic to them.

Medium-Firm is Subjective

There is no standardized definition of what makes a mattress firm and what makes one soft. A larger person might describe a mattress as soft while a lighter on may say that the same one is firm. Buzzwords like ultra-plush sound appealing, but it’s hard to know if sleep quality is improved until someone has spent actual time on the mattress. It just comes down to comfort.

Tossing & Turning

Those not sleeping well anymore may find it’s time to invest in a new mattress. People that are sleeping better away from home can take this as a sign it’s time to consider replacing their mattress. The current mattress doesn’t have to appear worn out to need replacing. There are things going on beyond the surface.
